Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept insurance, and how much does therapy cost?
If we are not in-network with your insurance, a standard 45–55 minute individual therapy session is $250 with Dr. Bhagwat and $175 with staff clinicians. Staff clinicians can sometimes offer a sliding scale based on your financial situation. We accept cash and credit cards; we do not accept Venmo, Cash App, or similar peer‑to‑peer payment apps, and we generally prefer not to take personal checks. Dr. Bhagwat is in‑network with Highmark Blue Shield of Northeastern New York, CDPHP, and Medicare, and staff clinicians are currently in‑network with CDPHP. For all other plans we work as an out‑of‑network provider, which means you may be able to get reimbursed by your plan for part of the cost, depending on your benefits. We will review fees and insurance with you before therapy begins so you know what to expect.
Do you offer in‑person therapy, online therapy, or both?
We offer both in‑person therapy in Albany, New York and online therapy for people anywhere in New York State. Many patients prefer to meet in person at our Wolf Road–area office, and we prioritize in‑person care when possible. About a third of our patients choose secure virtual sessions instead. As long as you are physically located in New York at the time of your session, we can meet either in person or online.
What ages do you see, and do you offer couples or family therapy?
We provide individual psychotherapy for adolescents and adults ages 16 and up. We do not currently offer couples counseling or family therapy. At times, and only with your full consent, we may meet with a partner, parent, or other important person in your life when it clearly supports your treatment. We do not work with children under 15; when appropriate, we are happy to provide referrals for younger clients.
Do you write letters for gender‑affirming care?
Yes. When it is clinically appropriate and aligned with current standards of care, we can provide letters of readiness for gender‑affirming care, such as hormone therapy or gender‑affirming surgery. We do not charge an additional fee for the letter itself. If you are seeking a letter, we will talk with you about your history, goals, and needs, and explain what the process looks like so you know what to expect.
What happens in the first few therapy sessions?
In your first sessions, we focus on understanding what brings you to therapy now, what you have already tried, and what you hope will be different in your life. We will ask about your history, including any trauma or major life changes, but we will move at a pace that feels manageable. We will also explain how we work, discuss which approaches might fit your needs, and check whether it feels like a good match on both sides. There is always space to ask questions and decide together on next steps.
